Practical Solutions - Configuration Management

My experience of Configuration Management grew out of asset management and as my database developed I became aware of the benefits it could provide by expanding the data stored to include other information such as IP addresses, Network Topology etc..As my configuration management system matured I tied it in to a basic helpdesk system, which linked the assets to the faults and provided a knowledge base. The result provided faster troubleshooting, improved security, version control and informed decision-making.

Concepts and Objectives

  1. The goal of Configuration Management is to keep information about the IT infrastructure current with specific item details and relationship to other items

  3. To maintain accurate topology of existing configuration items
  4. To provide information about:

    4. impact assessment
    5. provisioning of services
  5. Concepts - CI and CMDB
