Far too often we find ourselves limited due the lack of a central knowledge base such as a SKMS and the bigger IT gets the less knowledge gets shared. People are hiding in their information silos with their heads down only coming up when they have to, may be they are scared they will get shot or find out that their process could be improved?
If I wish to get to somewhere in London, I have a road map providing me with useful information on how to get there. Why is it that it is so difficult for companies to realise that to function we all need to have a road map that lets us know how to get from A to B? You want some software installed? Here you go this is what you have to do to get it or not depending on approval.
On an IT level we need to be able to access far more such as topology of the network, policies, procedures, licensing and it would be very helpful to see the implementation of the RACI model so that we know who is Responsible, Accountable, Consulted and who is to Informed.
Anyway my point is that working with blinkers will not help you see what is coming at you side on; you need to look beyond the box and look at the whole process not just what is right in front of you. We need road maps to success that provide us with warnings where needed and to be able to budget for our journey we need to know where we are going and we need to be assured that the vehicle we are travelling in is fit for purpose. We need to come out of our silos and map out our processes. Sure in the short term it will take some time but in the long run it will save your company money, no more time waisted going round in circles.
